Author Spotlight - Jessica Coulter Smith

In the Author Spotlight today we have Jessica Coulter Smith with her new book Jennifer and the Alien Badass.

What is your favorite thing about Jennifer and the Alien Badass?

I love that even though she has a grown daughter, it’s not too late for her to find love. Jennifer has spent her life making her daughter a priority, but when an older sexy alien offers to claim her as his mate, she’s given a chance to live life for herself.
,
Black and white or all the colors of the rainbow?

All the colors of the rainbow 😊

This is the 15th book in your Intergalactic Bride series – what keeps the books fresh for you?

Each story is different. My characters are a range of ages and occupations. Some are single moms, or single dads. But one thing holds true for all of them…they want someone to love who will love them back. I’ve had a blast writing this series – from geeky aliens to the biggest badass of them all – and I hope I get to write many more.

Hard or soft?

Hard

What is your favorite time waster?

Facebook. Although, I’m not sure it’s so  much a favorite, as I just get sucked in every time I’m on there. Sometimes it’s like a train wreck – you just can’t look away.

Weddings or warriors?

Warriors

How many warriors does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

None. They command someone else to do it.

Who was harder to write – Jennifer or Siril?

I would have to say Siril. As a mom, I could easily relate to Jennifer. Siril is this big badass on his world, feared throughout the galaxies and a powerful warrior. But I couldn’t make him too hard, so there’s a softer, vulnerable side to him too. It was a balancing act.

Sunrise or sunset?

Sunset – because I’m NEVER awake for sunrise LOL

Abs or glutes?

Hmmm…I like both, so I’m not sure I could pick

Do you procrastinate more at the beginning, middle or end of the story, or not at all?

Generally at the middle. The beginning flies by, and once I’m nearing the end, I usually know exactly how I want things to go. But that pesky middle usually stumps me.

What's the sexiest food/meal?

Tiramisu

Can you share some sexy lines from Jennifer and the Alien Badass?

He leaned forward a little more and lowered his voice so no one else would hear. “What I’d like is to take you back to my hotel suite, rip every stitch of clothing from your body, except possibly for those sexy as fuck boots, and take you so hard and fast that your legs shake and you scream my name over and over. I want to worship every inch of your body, take you so many times you can’t walk tomorrow, and then I want to do it all over again. I want to erase every memory of every other male you’ve known, eradicate them one orgasm at a time, until you’re begging me to never stop.”

Excerpt

“Should we set a course for home?” Haptir asked.

“Yes. Once you’ve finished disposing of the pirates. I don’t want their remains anywhere near Zelthrane-3.” Siril left them to their work and went to his quarters. The door had barely closed before he started removing his boots and pants. He turned on the cleansing unit and stepped under the spray. Scrubbing his body and hair twice, he leaned his head against the wall and wondered what life would be like without constant bloodshed. Not that a good battle wasn’t fun -- preferably on someone else’s ship so they had to deal with the cleanup.

Such things didn’t used to bother him, but the older he got, the less he liked the messy side of his work. Why couldn’t they die neatly? Was it really necessary for a decapitation to douse everything in blood? But what else was he to do? If he wasn’t beheading people, was he supposed to sit at home and die of boredom? He’d been asked to train their warriors full time, and it was an honorable position, but Siril wasn’t certain he was ready to hang up his blades just yet. There were many good fights left in him.

He shut off the unit and dried himself. He looked at his bed longingly, but there would be plenty of time to sleep once they reached home. They’d been after the pirates for days and he’d slept little. In his youth, he could have stayed awake for days on end without feeling the least bit tired. But now, as the oldest active warrior for their world, he was feeling every one of his fifty years. Donning clean clothes, he checked his boots before putting them back on, and went to the galley. He grabbed a Melranian star fruit and leaned against the counter. His crew could handle the cleanup and navigation necessary to get them back home. There was little for him to do.

Except think.

The council had often offered Siril time off over the last few years, encouraging him to take a trip to Earth and get off world without having to engage in battle. He’d always waved them off and gone right back to work, but maybe it was time to take a break. Even a week off might be nice. While Zelthrane-3 was more advanced than the humans’ Earth in many ways, the blue planet had a lot of marvels that interested him. Like music and movies. And while he’d heard there would be a place to dance opening soon in Terran Prime, it might be entertaining to see all of those things on Earth and explore the human world a bit. Providing he didn’t scare the puny humans.

When the bride program had first opened, they’d welcomed all humans to their world, including males who took temporary jobs on their planet to make the human females feel more at ease. But over time, only brides were allowed on Zelthrane-3, and the screening process had gotten stricter. The first few months of the program, there had been too many fights, as well as human females falling for the human males. Things were streamlined now, and from what he could tell the program was a huge success. He’d often thought of checking out the brides to find a mate of his own, but they all seemed so young. He wondered if the council only approved the young ones to guarantee children for the mated pairs. He didn’t know much about humans and wondered if the older females either couldn’t have children or if it would be too hard on their bodies. More than likely, he would spend his years alone.

“Captain,” Velic said over the system. “We’re about to enter warp drive and will be home shortly. It might get a little bumpy.”

Siril braced his feet and continued to eat his fruit as the ship vibrated around him. He wondered what sort of female would ever settle for someone like him. He’d been handsome once, but wars had ravaged his face and body. There were females out there who thrilled over being with a warrior such as he, but they were few and far between. And once the thrill was over, they left and he was alone once more. No one wanted to wake up next to him every day for the rest of their lives.

If he ever did claim a mate, he had a wonderful home for her. The council had provided him one of the best houses on his world. It was large, easily big enough for many children, and had a lush garden out back. He seldom saw it, spending most of his time on this ship trying to keep the galaxy safe. If he did take a mate, he supposed he’d have to spend more time at home. Was he ready to give up this way of life if it meant having a warm female to bed every night?

He wanted to say yes, but he wondered if he’d miss wreaking havoc and striking fear into the hearts of those around him. Just his name was enough to send most running in fear. He’d earned his reputation and was proud of it. Human females seemed fragile, though, and he doubted they would thrill over his many kills. He wanted a female every bit as fierce as he was, but he had yet to meet one. Someone who could take care of themselves if he had to leave on a mission. Worrying about a helpless, fragile mate would only get him killed. No, he needed a warrior. But in all his travels, he’d never met a female warrior. There were stories of some on far off worlds, but it was doubtful he’d ever meet one.

Who was he kidding? No one would ever want a mate like him. He was too damaged for someone to ever love him. But if he did have a mate, if a female ever took a chance on him, he’d shower her with love and affection and make sure she never wanted to leave.

When he was home, he watched the mated couples. Their females smiled at them with such affection, and grew round with their children. Not that he had the slightest idea of what to do with a child. He’d never held one for fear he might hurt them. They seemed so small and breakable. Part of him wanted children to experience the pleasure of having a family, but the thought of bringing a tiny baby into the world was frightening. And at his age, by the time he had grandchildren he might be too old to enjoy them. Gods! Grandchildren?

He shook his head at his folly. He wasn’t getting a mate and wasn’t having children, so it was a moot point. He’d do better to hone his battle strategies and mold the young warriors who needed a guiding hand. Leave populating the planet to the younger males. The greatest gift he could give his people was keeping them safe, either by his own hand or those he trained. With some luck, he’d die in battle and never have to live a lonely life once the council retired him.

The ship shuddered under his feet and groaned, telling him they’d touched down. Siril tossed the core of the star fruit and made his way through the ship to the docking port. His crew was already exiting as he made his way down to the ground below. There was no one to greet them, but there never was. All of his crew were single, and while some of them still had parents, they were very much on their own.

The suns shone brightly overhead, their warmth caressing his face. It was good to be home, another crisis averted. His people were safe and were none the wiser to the threat that had been hanging over their heads. If the pirates had managed to land, many lives would have been lost. He walked the streets, smiling at the children playing he passed along the way. This was why he spent so much time in space. So families could stay together, could live in peace, and those precious children would have a chance to grow up and maybe become warriors themselves one day.

The clinic loomed ahead and he hoped no one was waiting. He didn’t mind the wait, but the fewer people he had contact with the better, until he knew he hadn’t been contaminated. He stepped into the cool interior and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the waiting room was empty. Easing down onto a chair, he extended his bad leg to give his knee a break. Sometimes the metal of his prosthetic made the joints in his knee ache. Getting old was a bitch.

He looked around the interior of the clinic, noting the changes since he’d last been in. Some blocks were stacked in a corner for the children who had to visit. A few books with human females on the cover graced a few tables. What were those called? Magazines? He picked one up, curious as to the contents. As part of his extensive training, he’d learned to speak and read all of the languages of Earth and all of the surrounding planets in his galaxy. The magazine in his hand was in Earth English and had articles on losing weight, the best summer diets, and “the top ten reasons he doesn’t love you”.

Siril smiled and shook his head, amused by the things human females found entertaining. He’d much rather read a book on the latest weaponry. He flipped through a few more of the books, wondering why all of the females in them were so skinny. The females in the bride program came in all shapes and sizes. Why didn’t their magazines have fuller-figured women in them as well?

He tossed the book aside and stood, moving across to the door that led to the offices and exam rooms. He cracked it open and peered down the long hall. Light shone under one of the office doors and Siril decided to make his presence known. His boots were loud against the polished floor and must have alerted the doctor someone was in the building.

The office door opened and Vyrex stepped out.

“Siril, it’s good to see you. Another successful mission?” Vyrex asked.

“The mission went well, but my ship was covered in the blood of pirates. Some got on me as well. I wanted to make sure I hadn’t contracted anything.”

Vyrex motioned for him to follow and led Siril to an exam room. He scanned Siril head to toe, ran some blood tests, and gave him a few injections. As the doctor studied the results of the tests, Siril waited to find out if it was bad news or if he’d managed to come out unscathed once more. He figured that eventually his luck would run out. Yes, he’d lost some body parts along the way in his missions, but otherwise he was still very healthy.

“Everything looks fine,” Vyrex said. “The injections I gave you will help boost your immune system and should fight off any viruses if any present over the next few days. I wouldn’t worry unless you start feeling ill, then come back and see me. We’ll run more tests then.”

“I think I may go off world for a bit.”

“Earth?” Vyrex asked.

Siril nodded. “The council has offered to send me many times for a vacation. I think it’s time I took them up on their offer.”

Throwback Thursday

The Mannies Inc series all started with a little book called... Mannies Incorporated. I have added a new book to the series every year since and have enjoyed the heck out of it.  They do not need to be read in order as each story is stand alone, although the Mannies Inc company refered to in most of the subsequent books comes from the end of the original book.

The newest in the series - Composing a Family - can be found at the bottom of this post.

Mannies Incorporated

Slayde's got the best job on earth: he's a nanny to Army nurse and widow Mindy's three kids. He's been with the family since the oldest was born and is Uncle Slayde to all three children. When Mindy's deployed, things aren't easy, but he manages just fine. At least he does until Mindy's big brother Drake shows up unexpectedly, announcing he's there to help while Mindy is gone.

Drake is almost a stranger to the kids, hot as hell, especially in his motorcycling leathers, and straighter than straight. On top of that, Drake's not used to dealing with kids, or with things like gluten free, recycling and not eating fast food and soon has Slayde's tight routine in shambles.

Slayde thinks Drake is far more of a hindrance than a help, at least at the start, but he tries to get along for Mindy's sake and eventually, having Drake around is easier than not. But what's he supposed to do when the straight, sexy leather wearing ex-cop makes a pass at him one night? Maybe there's more to Drake than Slayde assumed.

Available at Evil Plot Bunny and Amazon.

A Family of His Own

Will’s a widower with three little girls, including six month old twins, to look after. Most days it’s all Will can do just to get home from his advertising job in time for goodnight kisses, but now his mother-in-law is leaving the country with her new boyfriend and Will needs the help of a professional nanny.

Benji loves being a nanny; looking after other people’s kids is the next best thing to having his own, and as a gay man, he figures it’s as close as he’s going to get. He’s between jobs and is thrilled when he gets the call from Mannies Incorporated to interview with Will's family.

He falls in love with the girls right away, but also finds himself attracted to their father. Benji knows he shouldn’t moon over his boss, especially when Will desperately really needs his services as a nanny, but he can’t help but wonder what it would be like to have a family of his own.

And Manny Makes Seven

When Adam's parents died three years ago, he kept his five younger siblings together, playing parent as best a twenty-one year old could under the circumstances. Now his academic mentor Helena has passed away from cancer, and Adam doesn't know what to do. He's shocked, but grateful when a reading of the will determines that he's not only inherited her beloved shi tzus , but also the house, a generous trust for everyone's education, plus three million dollars, some of it earmarked for hiring a nanny.

Hutch has worked as a nanny since he was nineteen, when he took over the care of his neighbors children when both parents were killed in separate missions overseas. He's worked with several families since and feels confident he can handle five children aged four through seventeen.

Hutch's arrival is just what Adam needs and as Hutch begins to turn the big house from Helena's place into their home, Adam and his siblings begin to see Hutch as more than just the nanny.

Can a path of tragedy and sorrow turn the corner to happiness and love?

Three to Get Ready

Single father Jack Jones is in dire need of a new nanny. His five year old son Nathan is legally blind, he has twin baby girls arriving in less than two months and the girl currently working for him is leaving at Thanksgiving to go home and continue her higher education. If Mannies Incorporated doesn’t come up with a viable candidate soon, he’s not sure what he’s going to do.

Dan Miller is on the hunt for a new job. He’s had some great placements with Mannies Incorporated, many as manny to multiple birth families to get them over the hump. He even has experience with special needs children, so the job he’s interviewing for looks like it’s right up his alley.

When Dan arrives at Jack’s house, he discovers that this Jack Jones is his Jack Jones, the man he was in love with during college, and who broke up with Dan because Dan wanted children. Will Dan and Jack be able to put the past behind them and work with each other, or will their past keep them from having a future together?

Available at Evil Plot Bunny and Amazon.

Making it Work

Parker has been Manny to Grif and Blue’s kids ever since the twins were first born. Fourteen years later, he’s caring for five kids and Grif is now a widower. Everything is about to change again for Park and his charges, though, as Grif is marrying a man with three girls of his own and the new family is moving to a big house they’ve built just outside of Ottawa.

Rand has been with his family since fifteen-year-old Josie was little, and he now finds himself transplanted from Austin, Texas to Ottawa, Canada when his charges’ father, Mike, marries Grif. Coming to a new house in a new country with a new blended family, he’s determined to make sure that even though they’ve been uprooted, his girls still have everything they want and need.

What could go wrong?

Park and Rand’s styles as mannies couldn’t be more different, the kids all hate each other on sight, and the newlywed fathers are busy honeymooning. It seems pretty clear the whole situation is a recipe for disaster. Can everyone find their place in this brand new family, including both mannies? And will Park and Rand ever see eye to eye on anything? The answer surprises even them.

Available at Evil Plot Bunny and Amazon.

Composing a Family

Tenor Abriole has just finished his stint as nanny for the Wilsons. He was with the family for twenty-one years, ever since he was eighteen. Now he’s looking for a new family, but finding that at thirty-nine, many people think he’s too old, and those who don’t think that’s a problem are balking at the fact that he’s a man, or that he’s gay, or both. He finally turns to Mannies Inc. for help finding a new position.

Daniel Thorpe is a well-known composer who lives and breathes music. He very much wants to be a father, so he goes the surrogate route, and winds up with triplets on the way. He turns to Mannies Inc. well before his girls are born, but so far has not been happy with any of the men who have applied, until Tenor shows up for an interview. Tenor’s experience being nanny to five children, as well as the fact that he stayed with a single family that long are both pluses in Daniel’s book.

Could it be that Tenor is the last note Daniel needs to compose his greatest work yet – his family?

Instant Pot Adventures

So, I found an Instant Pot for a good price while out Christmas shopping late last year (I love being able to call within the last three weeks 'last year') and so I picked it up. I love that the company that makes it is here in Ottawa. Talk about buying local.

So far I love it. And, unlike a lot of stuff, I've been willing to experiment with it.

The very first thing I made was beef stew. It was yummy and the meat was so succulent. Plus it took an hour from start of veggie cutting until being able to eat it and how cool is that?

I did rice in it. Non-instant rice in ten minutes. Very cool. Rice poudding was also created in it. Again yum.

I made chili. Almost but not quite too spicy and again, done in less than an hour.

Yesterday I wanted danish red cabbage and while the recipe I found for it didn't call for the same thing to put in with the cabbage, I just used the time settings then invented my own additives. A cup of cranberry juice and a cup of vinegar with a couple tablespoons of sugar. I probably should have put a little bit of salt on it, though that's easy enough to add when it goes on the plate. It turned out well - 10 minutes of Instant Potting instead of severl hours on the stove - so cool! It needs more vinegar, but is otherwise very good. And probably most people would say it's vinegary enough, I'm just a freak who likes things vinegar forward.

I also made black eyed peas for supper the other night. Didn't soad them overnight, didn't have them simmering all day long. They went into the pot hard, six cups of water were added along with a couple tablespoons of better than bouillon (and the recipe claimed that they didn't need anymore seasoning than that - really? I beg to differ.) I added a tablespoon of cumin, another of garlic powder and yet another of chili. They were a great consistency and not bad flavor, though I'd have liked there to be a bit of a kick, so I will add a half tablespoon of chili more next time.

Top Ten Tuesday

It's only the beginning of January once a year, so I figured I'd go with a New Year's theme for today's top ten.

Top Ten Things I Will Try To Do in 2018 (not resolutions - I don't do resoluations as I never follow through - things I'm going to try to do I can always start trying again if I fail)

10. Go to the gym at least once a week.
9. Eat way less potato chips
8. Give up soda altogether
7. Work harder on getting my sugars down.
6. Not get mad at myself when I don't get everything done on a todo list that is longer than there is time in a day.
5. Do less work on the weekends
4. Post pics more often on Instagram. I need to find something that would be fun/interesting to do daily.
3. Be better at hitting writing deadlines (ie, work more on the books that have sooner deadlines and the 'noisy' boys get to be a reward)
2. Not leave blog posts until the last minute.
1. Improve my time management (and if I can get this one down, it'll help all the others)

What are you hoping to do in 2018?

Movie Monday

I'm going to start 2018's movie monday with Star Wars - the Last Jedi! I saw it in the theatre in 3D. I do love that you can buy your tickets ahead of time and reserve your actual seats. Gone are the days of having to show up an hour ahead to buy your ticket and get in line so you can run for a good seat.

On to the movie - stop reading if you don't want spoilers.

I loved this movie. I really loved this movie.

It was everything that is good about Star Wars and held my attention from beginning to end. There were lots of strong female characters and good diversity. Lots of bots and secondary characters I cared about. It was great to have not only CP30 and R2D2 back, but BB8 and Chewbacca as well.

The CGI was brilliant - the ice foxes were stunning and beautiful. Everything is so seamless now compared to when the original movies came out. It's like all that stuff really exists.

I loved having Chewy back. I loved the semi-homage to Hoth with the mineral planet where they hid out. And I loved how the duel between Luke and Kal had lots of hints about how Luke wasn't actually there. Luke's death was gorgeous, too, with him fading into the force, his robe floating off in the wind.

The scene where the rebel ship hyperjumps into the First Order's flagship was stunning.

And yes, I got verklempt when the dedication - In loving memrory of our princess, Carrie Fisher - came up on the screen at the end of the movie. The whole movie was a great homage to her, really.

I came out of the movie, wanting to see it again right away, and preferably in the theatre. This doesn't happen often - oh, there's plenty of movies I want to see again, but I'm usually quite happy to wait until it comes out in blu-ray. While I probably won't go again in the theatres, I totally want to.

So at least two thumbs up for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
